Surveillance Video Shows Black Hotel Worker Attacked by White Guests Who Called Her Racial Slurs During Attack

A Black woman who works at the Mystic Quality Inn in Stonington, Connecticut was assaulted at work by two guests who beat her up while yelling racial slurs. Chrystal Caldwell has been working at the inn for seven years told WTNH the couple was staying at the hotel and attacked her twice.

The encounter captured on surveillance video started when the man called down to the front desk complaining he wasn’t getting hot water in his room. Caldwell said she would have maintenance fix the issue or move them to another room. However, Caldwell says the man got upset and started to call her names adding that he would send his girlfriend down to “kick her ass.”

Not long after the man came to the desk and Caldwell told the general manager and executive housekeeper, who spoke with the man who kept threatening Caldwell. When she talked with him, the man threw a punch at her over the desk, but the 59-year-old fought back as much as she could. After the incident, Caldwell said doctors told her she suffered a concussion and harm to her right eye and damage to her back, ribs, and wrist.

The inn called the police and told Caldwell not to leave the employee lounge while they looked at surveillance footage. But when Caldwell went into the hallway to get ice for her face she attacked once more. The man’s girlfriend first approached Caldwell blaming her for scratching her boyfriend. The pair attacked Caldwell pushing her to the ground kicking her several times.

The incident occurred while the police were still there.

“I am almost 60 years old, for him to want to physically fight me is very, very, very, very hard for me,” Caldwell told The Day. “We are people, we deserve to be here, I’m an American citizen, I pay taxes. My people don’t deserve to die, we don’t deserve to die. You want to physically harm us and kill us for what? The color of my skin? I’m not foreign, I’m from here. I’m just darker than they are. And I don’t deserve to be treated any different, it’s not right and it has to stop.”

According to Fox61, the girlfriend who attacked Caldwell sent a message to the news station stating Caldwell attacked them and her “case would unravel in court.”  The state’s attorney’s office and the Stonington police have reportedly been working on warrants for the man and woman to bring them back to Connecticut.

“Up until now, quite frankly, it’s just been lazy police work,” Caldwell’s attorney John Strafaci told the news station.
