The couple who attacked a Connecticut hotel worker last month has been arrested and face bigotry, bias, and assault charges. The attack was captured on surveillance video on June 26th. The New York couple Philip Sarner, 39, and Emily Orbay, 29, were taken into custody by the NYPD and U.S. Marshals on July 13. Crystal Caldwell an employee at the Quality Inn in Mystic, Connecticut were attacked by the pair, who had been a guest at the hotel. The surveillance video shows the couple assaulting Caldwell. The attack continued until another person jumped in.
Sarner faces charges of second and third-degree assault and Orbay will be charged with two counts of third-degree assault. Both face charges of intimidation due to bias and bigotry.
Caldwell says the couple called her “monkey” multiple times during the incident. The incident took place after Sarner called to the front desk complaining about the hot water in the room not working. Caldwell says could move him to another room or have a repairman come fix the issue.
According to another hotel worker, Sarner threatened to send his girlfriend downstairs to “kick her a-s.” Caldwell hung up on the man, and he proceeded to come downstairs.
While the hotel executive manager and housekeeper spoke to Sarner, he threatened Caldwell once she responded, the man attacked her. Caldwell said after the police arrived she went into the hallway to get some ice for her face when the couple jumped on her for a second time. Punching her in the face and kick her to the ground.
Caldwell said during this attack the couple said, “Black lives matter? Your life doesn’t matter, you don’t deserve to live on this earth.”
