BLM activists look for new approach in coming winter months

Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists says they’re meeting with city officials and planning for virtual events going into winter according to KATU. The news outlet, asked members of the group JUCIE how they plan to keep people engaged in the movement.

“The damage to property while some people, kind of, even within the protests, some people may not be totally aligned with the damage to property. But it applies pressure and keeps the focus on the movement,” David Myers said.

“Personally, I don’t think that the vandalism always aligns with the movement. But I think just the level of awareness that it brings,” he said. Myers believes this could deter from the messaging of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Yeah, damaging small businesses is something that should never happen, damaging businesses owned by BIPOC community members is something that should never happen. There’s definitely some people here in the community and the protests that are only for destruction,” he said.

Activists say they’re working to convey a message of peace.

“It’s kind of frustrating to always have to contend with that when we’re really putting boots to the ground and we’re in these rooms and we’re having these conversations and we’re doing the best that we can. It’s kind of hard to have to answer for that,” said Julianne Jackson with Black Joy.
