Florida family demands answers into 5-year-old’s disappearance at school

A Florida mom is searching for answers after her 5-year-old son went missing for almost two hours after school last Friday according to WEAR TV 3.

Jayquan Rigdell usually is picked up after school by his grandmother each day. However, last week the family says his teacher didn’t know where he was, and said that he “wandered off.”

Now, the family demands answers.

“I said what you mean wandering off?” Brenda Thomas, Rigdell’s grandmother told the news station.

Rigdell was ready to be picked up outside Montclair Elementary in Pensacola last Friday, when the 5-year-old disappeared, at least out of sight from school employees. Thomas said she picks up Rigdell from school each day around 1:30 p.m.

“They know every day I’m here getting my grandbaby,” Thomas said.

Thomas says Rigdell’s teacher informed her she didn’t know where the boy was and she wasn’t willing to help.

“The principal ain’t anywhere to be found! Or the teacher!” Thomas said. “Why didn’t you stay their to help my grandmother find your student? That’s not ok! That’s not someone you want watching children.”

Thomas says she immediately started scoping the neighborhood for Rigdell.

“I didn’t know where my baby was, so I thought somebody maybe got him,” she said. “So I rode all around Montclair, Ayers Blvd., everywhere looking for him. I got back to the school and told them I still couldn’t find him.”

Around an hour and a half later, through the help of family and friends, Rigdell was found.

“Found my baby down Montpellier, walking! Crying! All sweaty, scared, shaking!” Thomas said. “My baby’s still scared. He’s traumatized because he didn’t know if he’d make it home.”

Jayquan’s mom says earlier this week, she’s yet to hear from her son’s teacher, principal or school district officials.

Rigdell’s family says they’re still waiting on an explanation.

“He’s just 5 y’all,” Thomas said. “All these kidnappers, traffickers, anybody could’ve got my baby and I would’ve never seen him no more. I want them to be held responsible for what happened to my grandbaby. And I’m not gonna stop until I get answers.”
