NBA Player Montrezl Harrell faces drug charge

Charlotte Hornets big man Montrezl Harrell is now facing a felony drug charge after police said they found vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana in his car during a traffic stop last month according to ESPN. The 28-year-old was pulled over in Richmond, Kentucky by a state trooper May 12 for driving behind a car too according to court records. The trooper says he smelled marijuana, then after searching the car found three pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags inside a backpack.

Harrell has since been charged with trafficking less than five pounds of marijuana. If convicted the former Louisville University basketball star, could face up to five years in prison. Harrell is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 13.

Harrell has played in the NBA for seven seasons including two years with the Houston Rockets, one year with the LA Lakers and three seasons with the LA Clippers. He was acquired by the Hornets in a trade with the Washington Wizards last season ESPN reports. Harrell will be a free agent this summer.
