Ohio Supreme Court Overturns Judge’s Decision Of Sentencing Defendant To Additional 6 Years For Cussing Him Out After Ruling

Manson Bryant has been in Judge Eugene Lucci’s courtroom at the Lake County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio since 1999 according to 19 News. Bryant has already served three prison bids on four different cases. Judge Lucci presided over about eight of Bryant’s criminal cases in the past decade. This included in his recent infraction for a July 2018 home burglary in Painesville Township.

In March of 2019, Bryant was found guilty of aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, and abduction. Judge Lucci sentenced Bryant to 22 years in prison. After hearing the verdict, Bryant spew expletives at the judge and accused Lucci of racism.

“F*** your courtroom, you racist-a** b****! F*** your courtroom, man. You racist as f***!” Bryant is recorded shouting on the video as court officers attempt to restrain him and lead him away from the judge. “Twenty-two f****** years! You racist-a** b****” he said.

After the outburst, the judge added an additional six years to his sentence The Columbus Dispatch reported.

“He poses the greatest likelihood of recidivism. I apparently thought that he was more remorseful that what he was. He was just feeding me a line of bull” the judge said.

Bryant appealed the case, and the Ohio’s Supreme Court decided in a 4-3 vote to overturn the additional prison time. Bryant’s sentence original ruling of 22-years in prison has been reinstated.

“Because a defendant’s display of disrespect toward a trial court is not a permissible sentencing factor that the court may consider under (Ohio law), we conclude that the six-year increase in Bryant’s sentence is contrary to law,” Justice Melody Stewart  wrote with the agreement of Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor.
