Jay-Z and Beyonce, arguably one of, if not the most powerful couples in the entertainment industry, have had their share of public scrutiny since they’ve been together, and have been living their best-unbothered lives throughout. Both usually live a life of privacy outside of usual media speculations and reports, choosing not to address critics/haters and not really giving many interviews, saving it occasionally for the music where the narrative is way more controlled. Amidst the various controversies that have surrounded them (i.e. the infamous elevator scandal, infidelity rumors, etc…), one in particular sticks out that really perturbed Jay-Z.
The power couple began dating shortly after their first collaboration, ’03 Bonnie & Clyde”, and privately married on April 4, 2008. After suffering a miscarriage, describing it as the “saddest thing that she had ever endured”, Beyonce made her return to the studio to write music in attempts to help cope with the loss. It was this return that birthed the album “4”, and would also bring another birth as well.
In 2011, MTV’s Video Music Awards would be the stage that showed the world the biggest and most exciting news in the Carter’s history so far. It was there that Beyonce revealed during a performance of her hit song “Love on Top” that she was pregnant, showing off an undoubtedly real baby bump to massive cheers and praise. This event alone would help propel the award show to be the most-watched broadcast history, pulling in 12.4 million viewers, and would land in the “Guinness World Records” for “most tweets per second recorded for a single event” on Twitter as well.

However, after that performance, “baby bump watch” began to receive much more scrutiny with people questioning how real her pregnancy actually was. Rumors would begin to spark more and questions begun to arise after a live sit-down interview on the Australian TV show “Sunday Night” in October of 2011. Donning a red dress that accentuated her baby bump, the “Queen Bey” sits down, but her belly seems to fold inwards, bringing many to believe the superstar was wearing a prosthetic belly underneath the dress.

Many started to speculate that a surrogate was carrying the child. Beyonce sat down with Katie Couric for an interview on ABC’s 20/20 where she addressed the rumors. “You know there are certain things that are so far, it doesn’t even affect me,” she says to Couric. “I’m cool, it is so ridiculous and over the top.”
Mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, spoke with Billboard where she explained her aggravations with the claims. “I thought it was very unfair and very cruel that someone would think that someone would be that diabolical to keep up a charade like that for nine months,” she said. “As a mother, it was painful for me to hear the crazy rumors. And I even had people ask me, which was so ridiculous.”
A healthy Blue Ivy Carter was born at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City on January 7, 2012. Jay-Z placed a recording of her heartbeat on his single “Glory” dedicated to her, as he continues to express his overwhelming joy of experiencing fatherhood for the first time.

“The most amazing feeling I feel, words can’t describe what I’m feeling for real / Baby, I paint the sky blue, my greatest creation was you,” he raps on the song to his daughter. Since then she has gone on to live life with her superstar parents, as well as blooming into a young artist herself, appearing on “Brown Skin Girl” with her mother on her latest effort “The Lion King: The Gift”, and “Blue’s Freestyle / We Family” on her father’s “4:44” album.
Now as folks are celebrating Beyonce’s birthday, a clip of Jay-Z speaking with The Breakfast Club in 2013 has resurfaced where he revealed his thoughts on the saga, where he admits he was upset. “That’s probably the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard,” the Brooklyn rapper said. “That’s messed up because […] it’s supposed to be a joyous time for you […] whether you say you care about it or not, it’s annoying, and you shouldn’t have to really deal with that as a human being, but that’s the position that we’re in.”

The couple have since had two more children, twins Rumi and Sir Carter.
