Georgia Trooper Jacob Thompson Has Been Charged After Fatally Shooting 60-Year-Old Black Driver

Georgia trooper Jacob Thompson who fatally shot 60-year-old Julian Edward Roosevelt Lewis during an attempted traffic stop earlier this month has now been fired and arrested. A statement released by the Georgia Department of Public Safety read, “The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) terminated Jacob G. Thompson today, Aug. 14, 2020, due to his “negligence or inefficiency in performing assigned duties; or commission of a felony.”

The incident took place on Aug 7th when Thompson tried to pull over a Nissan Sentra for a traffic violation in Screven County, Georgia. Once the driver refused to stop Thompson performed a maneuver that forced the car off the road into a ditch. Thompson then got out of the police car and fired a single shot at Lewis, which killed him.  Civil rights attorney Francys Johnson claims Lewis was shot in the face while he was in the car. Johnson says the traffic violation violation was minor offense like.”

Johnson also said the traffic violation was minor offense. Thompson now faces felony murder and aggravated assault charges. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the shooting. Three civil rights lawyers including Georgia NAACP President James Woodall called for the FBI to become involved in the incident during a viral meeting last week.  Lewis leaves behind a wife, son, and two grandchildren.

“I am hurting. I am in pain over the taking of the life of an innocent man. It doesn’t make sense. I miss my husband. I love my husband. The crying, the loneliness just won’t stop. It’s so wrong,” his late wife said.

Charisse told ProPublica she wants to celebrate the news and will work with her daughter to “regroup on the goals that we have set for each other.”

Eddie Herron, Grace’s current case worker, reported she “has been doing very well,” and is still seeking therapy. He also complimented Charisse for working “diligently” to secure services including family and individual therapy and parenting classes.

“They both realize the importance of making positive decisions,” Herron said during Tuesday’s hearing. “At this point, I think it is best for the family to move forward and utilize the tools with the support in place in the community.”
