Doja Cat’s had a rough return after being on the edge of “cancellation” when some less than flattering internet activity came to light. On the heels of achieving her first #1 with “Say So,” the good times came to a screeching halt all of a sudden. Just as she’s begun to release new music, one of the OG’s of hip-hop has weighed in on her online shenanigans — publicly.
Doja Cat has been linked to a social media platform called TinyChat that has its own ‘groups’ feature, that operates like a chat room. There are claims, video and message board screenshots which show that Doja Cat interacted with these types of people – many whom are also known to be overtly terrible to Black people both off and on the internet, as a way of life.
Back in a 2019 Paper magazine interview, Doja Cat told the publication that she liked to frequent a “weird” chatroom that she refused to discuss or name after bringing it up.
A trail of tweets and other moments have since been paraded across the Internet, including a song that allegedly uses very specific language that is coded as anti-Black online in various places.
Eventually the whole thing came to a head and the recently minted #1 “Say So” rapper took to her social channels to finally log an apology in hopes of recovering some of the goodwill she had just recently acquired, thanks to the success of her song’s remix that featured Nicki Minaj.
“I want to address what’s been happening on Twitter,” she began. “I’ve used public chat rooms to socialize since I was a child. I shouldn’t have been on some of those chat room sites, but I personally have never been involved in any racist conversations. I’m sorry to anyone I offended.”
Presumably thinking enough time had passed to allow her to re-emerge back onto social media, Doja Cat jumped on Twitter once again after a hiatus to talk to her fans – or more than likely just talk, since most are all still locked in the house. When asked about why she had returned, she replied “because I like to write stuff.” Another person said “You seem upset,” to which she replied, “Oh if you only knew.”
This time, Doja wasn’t even doing anything but minding her business. Legendary hip-hop emcee Nas has taken aim at Doja Cat’s previous antics, that many viewed as anti-Black, in his lead up single to a new album soon to be released.
Produced by super producer Hit-Boy, “Ultra Black” is Nas’ latest ode to Black culture – a common theme of his songs over the years.
“We goin’ ultra black, unapologetically black/The opposite of Doja Cat, Michael Blackson black,” a line from the song reads. Michael Blackson is a popular comedian that has made a career of his darker skin tone, which leads some to think that Nas’ usage of Doja’s name was purely as a pop culture reference point.
However, others think that the line is a diss from one of hip-hop’s most Pro-Black rappers. There’s been no response from Doja Cat as of yet.
