NYPD Standoff With Black Activist Accused of Yelling In Officer’s Ear With Megaphone, DA Reduces Charges

Cyrus Vance Manhattan District Attorney recently reduced charges against a Black activist after a police standoff that didn’t end in an arrest. The standoff between the New York City Police Department and Derrick Ingram took place on Aug 7 The New York Times reported. Some officers were wearing tactical gear and armed with shields and police dogs. There were also sharpshooters and a helicopter at the standoff.

The officers were present to arrest Ingram for a felony assault charge. The charge was from an incident with an officer at a protest in June. Ingram allegedly “placed a handheld megaphone directly against the officer’s ear, activated the megaphone and yelled, causing pain and protracted impairment of hearing,” NYPD spokeswoman Sgt. Jessica McRorie said in a statement according to CNN.

Police waited outside his complex last Friday, while Ingram was inside his home on Instagram live.  “What did I do? What did I do?” he said on live. “I was born Black; that’s what I did.”

Ingram refused to let the officers in because they didn’t have a warrant. While Ingram was inside, protesters gathered on the block to support the activist. The officers were present for six hours before they left after Dermot Shea NYPD Commissioner ordered them to leave. Shea received praise from Mayor Bill de Blasio.
