17-year-old loses both parents to COVID-19 just days apart: ‘We were a regular family’

A Georgia teen is coping with the lost of both parents after they passed away from COVID-19 just days apart. Justin Hunter said his parents Angie and Eugene Hunter made sure they took precautions, but the whole family still tested positive for COVID-19. “We were a regular family, just trying to stay safe during this pandemic,” Justin said. “I don’t really know how our family got the virus.”

The senior says he was asymptomatic, but his parents began showing symptoms and were taken to the hospital. “Their temperature, it skyrocketed. They had headaches, a horrible cough. They just felt very lazy,” Justin said. Eugene, 59, an accomplished musician passed away virus on July 26. Angie Hunter, 57, a human resources executive passed away four days later.

The 17-year-old says his strength going through this tragedy, from his two biggest roles models who were his No. 1 fans since he began playing football.

“They never raised me to sit around and feel sorry for myself in any situation, and I just gotta keep going and pushing,” he said. “I know they’re happy up there, and that’s what makes me happy.”

Justin posted last week on Twitter, thanking the community for all the support he has received since his parents’ death. A GoFundMe created for the teen has raised over $500,000.
