The City of Chicago shared startling statistics Monday that showed that its Black residents represent a disproportionate number of COVID-19 fatalities.
Even though Black Chicagoans are only 30 percent of the city’s population, they comprise 52 percent of Chicago’s COVID-19 cases and 72 percent of its deaths. By comparison, white people, who make up 33 percent of Chicago’s population, comprise about 11 percent of coronavirus deaths.
In other words, Chicago’s coronavirus death rate for Black people is seven times the number for whites.
Yes, you read that correctly.
