‘Something That You Never Want to Go Through’: Dwyane Wade Shares Heartache of Telling Gabrielle Union He Had a Baby with Another Woman

As the Feb. 23 debut of his ESPN documentary “D. Wade: Life Unexpected” nears, Dwyane Wade is finally opening up about the pain he and Gabrielle Union endured on their journey to reconciliation with the added heartache of him fathering a child with another woman in 2013.

The former Miami Heat star and actress have been married for nearly six years, and from what the public can gather, their union runs like a well-oiled machine, though it is not without its trials.

Despite their public status, much of their relationship hardships have not been witnessed or even heard of, except for the time in 2013 when the couple split for only a little over three months, leaving just enough time for Wade to father a child with former “Basketball Wives” cast member Aja Metoyer.

When news broke of the ‘break baby,’ Wade addressed the rumors head-on before taking to the court with Heat teammates.

“I had a time, a part in our break, in our pain and our hurt, a blessing came out of it in my life, having a son that was born healthy. So I’m moving on,” said Wade, who was 34 at the time.

Now in an intimate and unprecedented look into his life, Wade is pulling back the veil and sharing that the hardest thing he has ever done didn’t have anything to do with the game or retiring from it, but to bare the burden of breaking Union’s heart with the truth.

“Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is man up and tell Gabrielle Union that I’ve had a child with somebody else. I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t eating,” recalls Wade in the documentary. “[It’s] something that you never want to go through.”

Through it all their love came out on top with Wade and his two children, Zaire and Zaya Wade, and nephew Dahveon Morris proposing to the “Being Mary Jane” actress in 2014.

Four years later the couple’s love and commitment to one another came out on top with the birth of their daughter Kaavia James Wade via surrogacy.
