The majority of gift-giving spirits in the know have no deep-seated desire to share their philanthropic efforts by shouting from the mountaintop that they are, in fact, helping the less fortunate. Interscope Records’ rap wunderkind K Camp is no different, and he has been giving for many moons in his hometown of Atlanta.
What is now known as “Campsgiving” started when Camp was only 17 years old. His mother, a veteran of the mortgage industry, was facing the reality of an industry crisis and a volatile market. Instead of drowning in her sorrows, she came up with a plan rooted in giving.
“Instead of [my kids] asking for anything, what we did was wrap up 25 gift bags,” Mama K Camp remembers. “With a couple of my girlfriends and their two kids, we went down to the streets of Atlanta and we gave out gift bags [to] homeless people.”
Word of their generous ways spread, and before long, K Camp and company were handing out more than 200 bags before he signed with Interscope Records in 2014. His legend also caught the attention of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which brought him on board this year to help address an age-old problem at World AIDS Day in Atlanta on Thursday, Dec. 5.
“I make music about sex,” he reasons, “But my message would be for the crowd to just stay safe and wrap it up. Don’t be out here foolish, just dipping and dabbing where you don’t need to. Be aware and just be smart. Everybody got a brain. Just wrap it up and be smart. Protect yourself. It’s AIDS. It’s only one message you can give.”
It’s that wisdom that likely opened the doors for K Camp to work with the largest nonprofit healthcare provider serving peoeple with HIV and AIDS in the United States — a business move that will almost certainly grow over time.
