HBCU GO, the nation’s top media platform for HBCUs, has signed a deal allowing football games to be shown on CBS stations this fall.

The new deal will allow for HBCU games to be available in 12 major U.S. markets, which would include 70% of Black households and 60% of all U.S. households. Cities include New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas, Atlanta, San Francisco, Boston, Tampa, Detroit, Miami, and Pittsburgh.

HBCU GO is a free streaming digital platform owned by Allen Media Group. Allen Media Group recently purchased Black News Channel out of bankruptcy in hopes to revive the cable news outlet.

“Allen Media Group is thrilled that the CBS O&O stations have joined our excellent group of broadcast television station partners to increase the reach of HBCU GO’s high-quality sports programming,” Byron Allen, the founder, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group, said in a joint statement with CBS.

“We are proud to amplify these amazing athletes and HBCUs, while at the same time helping to finance the education of these young adults. Now sports fans across the country will have access to best-in-class games from America’s HBCUs.”

“We are honored to work with our partners at Allen Media Group to bring live broadcasts of HBCU football games to our audiences in 12 major markets,” said Wendy McMahon, president and co-head of CBS News and Stations.

“As a Louisiana native and football fan, I am personally and professionally proud to play a role in having our stations shine a light on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the student athletes who are living out their dreams both on the field and in the classroom.”

Byron Allen Wants To Build “World’s Biggest Media Company”

On top of HBCU GO, Byron Allen is on a mission to build the “world’s biggest media company” with his recent purchase of the Black News Channel.

The $11 million purchase gives Allen Media Group access to 45 million homes through providers like Comcast, Charter, and DirecTV, and Allen says his company can grow that distribution to about 80 million in the next six months.

In October 2021, Allen received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to entertainment and media.

“I am truly blessed,” Allen told the Detroit Free Press. “As a young kid growing up in Detroit, in a blue-collar family, I never dreamed I’d go to Los Angeles on a two-week vacation with my mother and end up staying and one day have a star on Hollywood Boulevard next to someone who gave me a break, Johnny Carson.”

Allen, 60, owns Allen Media Group, a $3 billion company which is comprised of 32 ABC-NBC-CBS-FOX network affiliate TV stations in 20 U.S. markets. The company also owns The Weather Channel and a dozen other high-definition TV stations that serve 180 million subscribers.

“I own a little less than 5% of the TV stations in the U.S.,” Allen said. “No Black person in America has ever owned more TV stations than me.”
