Committing to self-care for the betterment of yourself is a necessary but brave act. In a world where we are constantly on the go and caught up in “grind culture,” it can be challenging and daunting to set boundaries in place that prioritize our own well-being. This is due to the fear of being seen by others as weak or lazy. Nevertheless, we must set aside time to care for ourselves. Whether it’s incorporating fitness into our daily routine or something as simple as putting our phones on “do not disturb” on wash day, it’s important to do so for our mental and physical health.
When she is not killing the game as a renowned DJ, author, or founder of the health, beauty, and fitness lifestyle brand HBFIT, Hannah Bronfman, a new mom, aims to prioritize taking care of mind, body and spirit. Because of this, her partnership with haircare brand Hair Food perfectly aligns with her self-care journey. Oftentimes as Black people, our hair can be the first thing to show signs of our stress so having hair products on deck that help us get ourselves together are a must. Hannah shared her experience and go-to tips for incorporating wellness into her daily life and into her hair regimen.
As a new mom, how do you incorporate self-care into your daily life?
Throughout my postpartum life, I learned how important it is to carve out time for yourself to recharge. I really indulge myself when my son Preston goes to bed. I will do my full nighttime routine, including my lengthy skincare routine, red/blue light, and face massage. But at the same time, making my favorite coffee blend with collagen and adaptogens is also a self care moment.
Finding a solid regimen for natural hair definitely takes a lot of trial and error. What does your natural hair care routine consist of?
For me, it’s all about nourishing and defining my curls in as few steps as possible. Being a new mom and work picking back up after quarantine, I don’t have lots of time to spend on my hair on a daily basis so I keep my daily routine to a few steps. I will wet my curls and put in a leave-in, like Hair Food’s Turmeric & Almond Oil Leave-In Detangling Milk, to revive them, this product is great for a quick on-the-go style. Sometimes I will go in with a wand to fix a few curls that need defining. On days that I do have more time to indulge in some self-care, I will put in a hair mask while I do other parts of my self-care routine like a facial massage.
What’s your go-to hairstyle when working out and how do you preserve your hair when doing so?
When my hair is in a blowout, I find it hard to prevent it from reverting back to curly so I will slick it into a ponytail or bun and stick to low impact workouts. If my hair is in a natural style, I find that the sweat works with my curls and sometimes defines them more—which is why I prefer to workout with my hair natural versus with a blowout.
Do you have a post-workout self-care routine? If so, what does it look like?
If I had an intense and sweaty workout, then I would wash my hair afterwards. If my workout was low impact and I didn’t break out a sweat, then I will push my hair until wash day. My post-workout self-care routine involves giving my hair a good cleanse with an ACV cleanser, like Hair Food Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse, to get rid of sweat and product build-up; it always leaves my hair feeling refreshed and clean.
