Texas police officer on leave after fatally shooting Black man who witnesses say was attempting to break up an altercation 

A police officer has been placed on leave as authorities investigate after a man was shot and killed Saturday according to USA Today. A Black man was fatally shot by police in Texas last weekend while he attempted to break up an altercation at a convenience store. Attorney Lee Merritt who is representing ]the Price family posted a statement on Oct. 4 stating  Jonathan Price tried to intervene in the situation before he was killed by police.

“Yesterday he noticed a man assaulting a woman and he intervened,” Merritt said. “When police arrived, I’m told, he raised his hands and attempted to explain what was going on. Police fired tasers at him and when his body convulsed from the electrical current, they ‘perceived a threat’ and shot him to death.”

According to WFAA, on Saturday, Oct. 3, Price was fatally shot at a Kwik Check gas station. Witnesses claim that Price struggled to break up the argument inside the store, but the encounter moved outside. Then when officers arrived on the scene, Price eventually got shot. The incident took place in Wolfe City a small town with about 1,500 people about an hour outside of Dallas issued a statement on Sunday.

“On October 3, 2020 an Officer-involved shooting occurred in Wolfe City. The Officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of this matter by the Texas Rangers. No further information is available for release at this time.”

In an interview with the news station, Price’s mother Marcella Louis says her son was a “hero.”

“He had a good heart. He always tried to help others. I taught him that all through the years,” Louis said.

Price a fitness trainer, and worked for the city’s public works department was well known for his giving and loving heart according to relatives. As of now, no information has been released by police, witnesses and Price’s family say the officer who shot him was white.
