Amy Cooper will now face misdemeanor charges for calling 911 and making a false accusation against Christian Cooper. Christian recorded the incident in a now-viral video which caused Amy to lose her job according to The New York Times. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, “Today our office initiated a prosecution of Amy Cooper for falsely reporting an incident in the third degree. We are strongly committed to holding perpetrators of this conduct accountable.”
Cooper is set to be arraigned on Oct. 14 and if she’s convicted Amy could be sentenced with counseling, community service, or possibly up to a year in jail time. The incident took place when Christian was bird watching in Central Park during Memorial Day weekend when he noticed Amy didn’t have her dog on a leash. The pair were in the Ramble, an area of the park where dogs are required to be on a leash. Christian asked Amy to put her dog on a leash. Amy refused and Christian tried to lure the dog with treats in an attempt to convince Amy to follow the rules of the park. Amy’s next action was to call the police and inform them a Black man was threatening her.
“I’m in the Ramble, there is a man, African-American, he has a bicycle helmet and he is recording me and threatening me and my dog,” Amy said during the call. “I am being threatened by a man in the Ramble, please send the cops immediately!” Cooper is seen gripping her dog tightly by the collar while she made the call. Amy eventually put the dog on a leash and Christian says “Thank you,” and stops recording.
Since the incident Amy has released an apology, “I want to apologize to Christian Cooper for my actions when I encountered him in Central Park yesterday. I reacted emotionally and made false assumptions about his intentions when, in fact, I was the one who was acting inappropriately by not having my dog on a leash.”
