A 12-year-old girl was jailed for making threats on social media.
According to WPLG, the girl posted a “death list” on Snapchat that featured students from her school.
The unidentified girl attends Falcon Cove Middle School in Weston, Florida, and used Snapchat to create the list on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. A second post on Snapchat followed and revealed that the students on the “death list” would be killed on Monday, Dec. 9.
After the Snapchat messages were screenshot and went viral, police in Broward County were notified about the threat. Detectives were able to trace the messages back to the girl and arrived at her home on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7.
When authorities arrived, she told them that the threats were fake. However, the student was arrested and is now facing two counts of a written threat to kill and false reporting concerning a firearm.
Authorities are taking more precautions when it comes to threats of violence at school. In 2018, former high school student Nikolas Cruz was the culprit in a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which is 25 miles away from Weston.
Cruz, who is charged with killing 17 people in the massacre, faces the death penalty if convicted.
